Linguaglossa, an ancient town on Etna built on lava flows, is located on the North side of Etna, the greenest area of Sicily. The town was founded by a group of Genoese artisans in 1500 and the Previtera family settled in Linguaglossa at the end of 1580, building the Palace in 1620.
The name Linguaglossa derives from the union of two words: the Latin "lingua" and the Greek "γλῶσσα" (glossa), whose meaning is "tongue", in reference to the tongues of fire coming from the numerous eruptions of the Etna volcano. The city was built on a lava flow in 1180 and was originally a religious center dedicated to Sant'Egidio, the town's patron saint still today.

Stroll through the ancient streets of the town, admiring the ancient noble palaces and historic churches of the town. The church of Sant'Egidio, the oldest in the town, is 100 meters away from Palazzo Previtera, the imposing Mother Church in the center of the square with its spectacular buildings. Discover Etna wine in the old warehouses of the town.

A tour of the historic center of Linguaglossa on foot to explore this unique territory through the eyes of the Previtera people. Local pastry shops have mastered the art of hazelnut paste, an ancient recipe of hazelnuts, sugar and water that is transformed into soft baked pastries. Pine and chestnut forests cover the slopes of Etna where men extracted wax from the trees and built wooden structures for their homes. Linguaglossa stands out for its rich production of hazelnuts, the oldest crop dating back to the Middle Ages, and of vines, whose production expanded in the 18th century due to the exceptional characteristics of the local grapes.

The city is easily reachable by car (40 km from Catania-Fontanarossa airport), by bus or via the Circumetnea Railway, literally the tour of Etna, which connects all the towns on the slopes of the volcano. The train was built to facilitate the movement of farmers and the lawyer Giuseppe Previtera was directly involved in the foundation of the Circumetnea in 1890. In the summer the railway turns into a real tourist attraction with the Etna wine train, which runs along the wine routes allowing you to discover the most beautiful cellars of Etna and taste their special wines. The train connects several locations and you can admire the terraced vineyards: an example of rural landscape architecture.
